Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Altherm ICF’s 300mm & 350mm Block Systems.

Altherm ICF confirms that both our 300mm and 350mm Insulating Concrete Formwork (ICF) block systems are now covered by Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), independently verified in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2.

EPDs provide standardised, third-party-verified environmental impact data for construction products, reported using a consistent methodology and a common set of indicators in accordance withN 15804. This enables EPD data to be incorporated into whole-building Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and supports more transparent product comparison in a building context.

The EPDs apply to the Altherm ICF block system, manufactured at the Altherm production site in Swords, Co. Dublin. The installed system comprises two 75mm EPS insulating panels connected by high-strength polypropylene webs, forming a cavity for on-site concrete infill.

•Altherm 300mm ICF system: EPS panels (75mm + 75mm) with a 150mm core for concrete infill, and can be used for house building.

•Altherm 350mm ICF system: EPS panels (75mm + 75mm) with a 200mm core for concrete infill, and can be used for multi-storey blocks and commercial buildings.

Altherm Insulating Concrete Formwork Systems are manufactured in compliance with the Irish Building Regulations 1997–2024 (structure, fire, sound, moisture, durability, and conservation of fuel and energy when used as specified) and are certified under NSAI Agrément Certificate 20/0415.

Efficient Representation Using Curtain Panels

Altherm’s ICF blocks are implemented in Revit using curtain panel systems. This approach enables a consistent and organised way to integrate the blocks into building models. Curtain panels allow designers to replicate the modular nature of ICF systems while maintaining the flexibility required for custom design and accurate quantity takeoffs.

The process begins with setting up a placeholder curtain wall, which acts as the host for the ICF blocks. The block thickness is controlled by adjusting the horizontal grid of the curtain wall. Insulating concrete forms (ICF) is a system of construction, used normally for the exterior and party walls of buildings. The resulting walls form a monolithic reinforced concrete structure.

The fire-retardant insulation used in the manufacture of the formwork is then retained to provide thermal insulation for the building. Certified interior and exterior finishes are applied to the surface of the insulation to complete the buildings.

Certification

Altherm ICF is certified by the NSAI Irish Agrément Board for buildings up to 6 floors, 18m in height and for fire and sound rated walls. The certificate specifies the conditions and detailed installation requirements under which the products must be installed and finished to meet or exceed the requirements of the building regulations, including those for fire protection. The certification process requires periodic audits by the certification body to confirm compliance with the certificate requirements and international ISO standards.

Insulation

The material used in the manufacture of Altherm ICF is a flame retardant Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). EPS is a certified insulation solution for buildings of all types, the world over. In all cases the EPS used by Altherm ICF, delivers a certified minimum compressive strength of at least 129kPa. This is well in excess of the compressive strength of 70kPa specified for typical external insulation systems, and thus forms a much stronger substrate for finishes.

External Finishes

The exterior finishes used must be certified by NSAI Agrément, this includes strict specifications for weatherproofing, longevity, fire safety and impact resistance. For ICF construction the renders are certified and applied to comply with CAT 1 of ETAG 004 CL. This is the highest impact category corresponding to heavy non deformable objects hitting the surface of the render and is a standard of impact resistance common to all construction methods. Only finishes with a reaction to fire classification of Class B-s1, d0 or better are ever used.

Fire

The concrete core of the systems provides a certified structural resistance to fire in excess of 60 minutes. Longer stability periods can be achieved by the installation of additional reinforcement to the structure as required. In all cases the EPS used is a fire-retardant grade, this means in practice that the EPS will not sustain a flame and will extinguish upon removal of a flame in a fire situation. Surface spread of flame is addressed by the internal and external finishes specified to Class O, or better, resistance to spread of flame. The EPS substrate in conjunction with the base coat and the finish coat gives a reaction to fire/ spread of flame as Class B-s1, d0. The flame-retardant EPS is thus encased in an inflammable Class 0 concrete core on the inside and a Class 0 render system to the exterior. This ensures that the requirements of Technical Guidance Document Part B for fire safety are met or exceeded.

Summary

Although it is considered a modern method of construction in Ireland, Insulating Concrete Forms have been used in residential construction the world over for many years. ICF as a construction method is approved by Certification bodies in all major jurisdictions and is a popular and growing method of construction worldwide.

Altherm ICF have been granted ISO 9001:2015 by the NSAI and achieved IQNET Certification.

ALtherm ICF are delighted to have been granted ISO 9001:2015 by the NSAI.

This certification specifies requirements for a quality management system when an organisation;

a) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and

b) aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

THE CLIENT Capcon Building

Cluain Dara Estate is a low-density residential development of 106 houses, located in Derrinturn, County Kildare. Twenty-four homes in Phase One were completed in 2006; however, following the economic downturn of that period, the subsequent phases were put on hold. In 2018 Capcon Building were engaged to complete Phases 2 and 3 – but they faced a challenge.

THE CHALLENGE Improving BER C to A2

Although it would have been possible to “get away with” delivering C-rated homes, the developer Alder Homes (formerly Landport) recognised that home-buyers were demanding better energy efficiencies. They tasked Capcon Building with improving the BER rating from High C to A-rated, within the constraints of the existing planning

We talked with Robert Finn, Construction Director of Capcon Building about the difficulties his team faced in working with planning that dated back to 2006.

THE WORK Using ICF to Achieve NZEB

The team at Capcon Building deployed further innovations in the third phase to obtain full NZEB compliance for the next phase of 22 houses. These innovations included employing the Altherm ICF build process alongside air-to-water heat pumps and heat recovery systems which brought them well within the threshold for achieving NZEB and BER rating of A2.

We asked Robert why he decided on the Altherm ICF system for the building project. Robert said:

CAVITY CLOSERS

Robert was also very impressed with the proprietary Altherm cavity closers that are used in conjunction with the ICF blocks minimise thermal bridging. Using cavity closers around the window and door openings ensures that heat loss is minimal and typically a very low thermal bridging factor of 0.04 is delivered. It’s a vital step in achieving an overall u-value of below <0.18.

COMPARISON WITH OTHER CONSTRUCTION METHODS

In previous builds, Capcon Building used a twin-wall blockwork construction method. Shifting to ICF has several advantages, according to Robert:

The industry has recognised Capcon Building’s achievement with Cluain Dara Estate as an example of construction excellence, with particular reference to achieving an A2 rating within the existing 2006 planning. Capcon Building and the Cluan Dara development have been nominated for both an Irish Building and Design award in late 2019 and an ICE Award in 2020.

Capcon Building is currently well underway with construction of 22 more properties in Ballintine Park in Allen, County Kildare. It’s their second development using Altherm ICF and the team are again seeing the benefits of the construction method.

THE CLIENT Alanna Homes

Based in Lucan, Co. Dublin, Alanna Homes is an Irish family-run property developer currently building approximately 400 units annually, and with a reputation for adopting innovative building systems and methodologies.

Our team at Altherm worked with Alanna on the prestigious Ardsolus development in Browns Barn, Citywest, which was a development of 60 x three and four bedroom homes.

THE CHALLENGE A2 + nZEB

In order to meet the demands of both the modern householder and best-practice standards in energy efficient building, every new home would need to be completed to nZEB standard and be finished to an A2 BER rating.

In terms of construction programme management, building houses in a suburban landscape relatively close to the city brings with it access challenges. This project would have to be managed to the highest standards with expert sequencing, stakeholder collaboration, and onsite communication all playing crucial roles.

THE WORK Getting the job done

The 60 homes were built using ICF (insulating concrete formwork) block. This provides excellent structural strength and thermal performance along with outstanding air-tightness . It also offers exceptional levels of acoustic insulation .

The superstructure was delivered using the Altherm ICF blocks ensuring delivery of A-Rated homes. Our client further developed their Rapid Off-Site System Build (ROSSB) process to include the use of the Altherm ICF block as a main element of the superstructure of the building. This approach delivers proven operational efficiencies and streamlines the development process for new home building.

Right throughout the construction programme, we worked closely with all stakeholders to ensure optimised deployment of Altherm products and make sure our client gained maximum benefit from its usage. Safety on-site has always been a priority for Altherm and the use of ICF reduces the load on all site workers as the blocks are much lighter.

Digital planning tools like Revit were also applied at key stages. Working with these solutions is ideal for ICF sites as the resulting dimensions of the building are much more accurate and typically much closer to the Revit modelling output. This means our client can bulk order doors, windows and external plastering materials. It allowed them to plan ahead, optimising budgeting and buying power within their supply chain.

Use of ICF also has many other advantages for the construction crews on site. Mixers, sand, cement, bags of cement, water supply are no longer required so the site is much cleaner. And on this project, like all other ICF sites, the project was able to move to first fix – carpentry, mechanical, and electrical very quickly, speeding up the finishing process of each unit.
